This meeting was a discussion of the methodological approach referred to as Design Research, Design Experimentation or Design Based Research, with a particular focus on the following two articles:
The topic is a potentially interesting one because if done well Design Based Research can be a methodological approach that allows for both the evaluation of an educational design in an authentic context, as well as the collection of data which may inform on the validity of the theoretical underpinnings of the design, and consequently it can be an attractive approach for educational technology research with a practice orientation. On the other hand there are those cynical about Design Based Research who claim that it has been used as a label in attempts to publish articles from the evaluation of under theorised and poorly planned teaching interventions.
